2003 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships for Durban South Africa.

The International Surfing Association (ISA) is pleased to announce that the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will take to the waters of North Beach in Durban, South Africa, from August 17 – 23, 2003.

A rationalization of the ISA’s international events and the decision to provide a singular focus for world junior surfing has resulted in the junior division being withdrawn from the World Surfing Games and amalgamated with what was the Quiksilver World Grommet Titles into a single new event.

In future one World junior championship will be held annually. The 2003 event will feature U18 and U16 Boys World Championship Divisions as well as an U19 Girls World Championship division. The junior Team World Championship title will also be decided in a separate team contest during the event.

National teams from Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, France, Hawaii, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, New Zealand, Spain, Tahiti, United Kingdom, USA, Venezuela and of course South Africa have all indicated to the ISA that they intend on sending teams to the event, and more countries are expected to add their names to the list in the next few months. It is expected that Australia, South Africa, Brazil and USA will feature prominently in the hunt for individual medals, however the emergence of Spain, New Zealand, France, Tahiti and Japan will add a new dimension to the fight for tournament honors.

"Finally there will be an event that will accurately determine who the junior champions of the world are while providing a talent pool from which the global surf industry can assess the junior exponents of the sport." said Greg Swart of Quiksilver South Africa.

The 2003 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships looks set to showcase a host of the world’s junior surfing talent and the ISA is confident that this event will provide the stars of the future.

"With the sport of surfing showing expansion in junior participation and performance worldwide, it is timely to concentrate effort into the promotion of this specific competitive area." said ISA President Fernando Aguerre

According to SSA General Manager and ISA Vice President Mr. Robin de Kock, "our plan is to make this, the first ever ISA World Junior Championships, an event to remember." The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships will be hosted by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the very same group that organized the memorable ISA World Surfing Games in June 2002
